Birmingham: Geography and Climate: The South. Located miles north of the Gulf of Mexico in north central Alabama, Birmingham lies in the Jones Valley between a ridge of hills running from northeast to southwest and the Red Mountain Range, which runs in roughly the same direction. This and other fossils discovered in the Red Mountain Cut indicate that the Birmingham area was once covered by oceans. Those include the foot skeleton of a mosasaur, a giant aquatic lizard.

Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter was once home to over factories manufacturing the ‘Birmingham pen’ – now it’s home to this museum that tells the tale. Housing over objects, visitors can learn how Birmingham’s steel pen trade supplied 75% of the world’s pens during the 19th : Richard Franks. The Birmingham metropolitan area, sometimes known as Greater Birmingham, is a metropolitan area in north central Alabama centered on Birmingham, Alabama..
